about
One lazy Saturday morning I was snoozing while listening to an interview on BBC Radio 4 with someone who was afraid of his own body. He described himself as a clockwork bag of guts and was terrified that something would go wrong. Parts of the interview kept coming back to me over the following weeks and started turning in to a song about overcoming fears. It started to remind be a bit of Presence of the Lord by Eric Clapton and at that point morphed in to a story about finding God and conquering death which added an uplifting and hopeful message to contrast to the more grisly lyrics.
lyrics
I'm a clockwork bag of guts
to be scorched or burst or torn
and i terrify myself
thinking of what could go wrong.
When my bobbing bulb of dread
thinks of being split or crushed,
blood runs cold through purple veins
just beneath my paper skin
I'm alive and I will die
I feel my breath and I can’t breathe
but I can gaze in to the stars
name constellations with my sons
I'm a bag of mostly water
to dissolve or leak or tear
to slowly seep in to the earth
once my heart no longer beats.
I'm a puppet made of bones
held by strings of fibrous flesh
a tumbling rag doll made of meat
until I finally come to rest.
I'm alive and I will die
when my heart beats it makes me freeze
but i can live and i can love
and I can worship my true lord
I have found a way to live
in this cage of dying cells.
I have finally found a way
in the presence of my lord.
I have found a way to live
in this cage of dying cells.
I have finally found a way
in the presence of my lord.
I will live and I will die
my bones of dust made of this world,
but my saved immortal soul
will live forever in the next.
